Songs of St Kilda
St Kilda is recognised by UNESCO as a Dual World Heritage site, of international importance both natural and cultural. The last of its Gaelic-speaking community left in 1930, but we can still hear their voices, and glimpse their long-lost way of life, through the tuneful songs that they composed and the things they sang about: their customs, their romances, their gossip, their humour, and their tragedies.
The songs are performed by two of Scotland’s most distinguished musicians: Gaelic singer / academic Dr Anne Lorne Gillies, and harpist Rhona MacKay. They are enhanced by Anne’s scholarly but relaxed commentary, and by a stunning visual presentation, including historic, iconic and scenic photographs. Surtitles – simultaneous translations of each song – ensure that the nuances of every line are available to Gaelic and non-Gaelic speakers alike.
